Stick To These Three Simple Skincare Rules If You Want A Clear Complexion That Lasts All Summer

Stick to these three simple skincare rules if you want a clear complexion that lasts all summer

Summer, oh how we love you. We simply adore your long lazy evenings spent in rooftop bars; we love how you bring us BBQ season, pimms and rose cravings; we’re grateful that you equal holidays abroad and festival season; and we just love how you make everything (and everyone) that little bit sexier, little bit crazier and a whole lot more fun. We do not however, love what you do to our skin. Let’s face it ladies: Summer isn’t our skin’s best friend. There is something cruelly ironic about a season that makes us want to shed our layers, ditch the make-up and go au naturel, while at the same time giving us a breakout of acne that is screaming for a layer of heavy-duty concealer. Rather than rocking a gorgeous, radiant glow, we’re sporting a crater-esque complexion that gets even angrier with each layer of sun cream and fake tan. The reason why we often tend to breakout in summer – even those of us that have a clear complexion for the rest of the year – is complex, but essentially comes down to a pore-blocking blend of increased sweat and our tendency to – unwittingly – be using denser, heavier products, such as sun cream. But don’t worry, because we’ve got three very simple tips, that will help to keep your skin clear and sans pimples this summer. So you can finally give that bare-faced glow a go.

Pick your SPF wisely

We’ve become wise to protecting our skin from ageing and an SPF has become a part of our daily routine, but our winter daily SPF doesn’t cut it in summer, so we upgrade to a stronger formula. But therein lies a problem: upgrading to a higher factor and slightly heavier-hitting SPF IS essential when the sun’s rays become stronger – when you go abroad for example – but then it suddenly becomes a trade-off between protecting our skin from the sun’s rays and fighting off potential breakouts. So why is it that our stronger facial SPF creams tend to lead to a sudden eruption of acne? There are two things that can cause sunscreen-related breakouts: pores can become blocked by mineral sunscreen, or it can flare up due to a sensitivity reaction to chemical UV-blocking agents. Basically, the mineral sunscreens can sit on top of the skin and gunk up your pores, while the chemical ones can irritate the skin. So, what should you do? Apply sunscreen and wait for the spots to start cropping up, or ditch it and risk melanoma and wrinkles? The answer is to stick to the latest batch of mineral facial SPFs, which contain micronised formulations of zinc and titanium dioxide and are far smoother, lighter and less prone to cause a breakout. Thank You Farmer Sun Project Water Sun Cream SPF50, £24 is a weightless SPF from a South Korean brand that is formulated specifically to not cause breakouts. It’s basically manna sent from the skin gods when it comes to keeping your summer complexion clear.

Cleanse cleverly and often

Cleansing effectively doesn’t always mean you need using the most astringent cleanser, the harshest face wash or double cleansing. Cleansing effectively is about cleansing cleverly – and often. We sometimes feel we can skip a morning cleanse in favour of a splash of water in the shower (come on, we’re all guilty of it at times) but given that our skin cells turnover most at night, plus we’ve spent the last eight hours smearing our face across a not-so-squeaky-clean pillowcase (and not to mention all that sweating – your bedroom’s lack of air con is just not cut out for summer heat), a thorough morning cleanse can be just as essential to your skincare regime as your evening one. If you DO want to skip the cleanser but still want the benefits of a thorough cleanse (and let’s face it, double cleansing feels like a little too evangelical and not to mention time consuming, when it’s not even 7am yet) try this exciting new product instead. Magnitone London Wipeout The Amazing MicroFibre Cleansing cloth, £15* is a face cloth will remove even the toughest, longest-wear and oil-based makeup, with JUST WARM WATER! Yep, you read that correctly. No need for double cleanser, single cleanser or even cleansing wipes this super soft wipe will do the job of cleansing your skin, eyes and lips, without any additional product. The microfibres swell up when wet, grabbing hold of makeup particles and trapping them away, meaning makeup is removed, smear free. (WE. ARE. SOLD)

A weekly facial is non-negotiable

Don’t fret – we can’t afford a weekly trip to a dermatologist either. That’s not what we’re suggesting. What we CAN afford – and what will reap serious skin benefits – is to set aside a couple of hours on a Sunday evening, EVERY Sunday evening, and dedicate that time to giving our skin a thorough check, to see what its requirements are at that moment, and dealing with them effectively. Thirsty-looking complexion following a slightly sun-heavy weekend? Replenish lost moisture with a hyaluronic acid-infused sheet mask, followed by a rich oil. Skin looking a little dull and lacklustre? A gentle exfoliation, followed by a brightening mask, such as PCA Skin Revitalize mask, $58* will restore its radiance. We love results-oriented skincare and this is a professional brand – and a powerful product- that seriously delivers.

There you have it – three super simple yet super effective tips to keep your skin cleansed, radiant and glowing all summer long. Without a single spot in sight. So put that concealer away until September and thank us later.
