5 Tips to Spring Clean Your Beauty Routine!

Ready to get motivated? Here's 5 tips to totally spring clean your beauty routine!

It’s that time of the year ladies...the weather is getting warmer and skirts are getting shorter, which means that spring is upon us. So, what better time is there to perform a little Marie Kondo ‘spring clean’ on your current beauty routine.

Depending on the size of your makeup collection, this can be a pretty daunting task. So, to get you started, we have listed our top 5 tips to spring clean your beauty routine:

  1. Check expiration dates

Confession time: we probably all have makeup in our bags that is past its expiration date...but, did you know that once makeup reaches its sell-by-date the chemical compounds that create the product start to break down? This can inflame your skin, causing irritation and give you itchy red patches, scaly skin and even tiny blisters (gross). Typically, mascara should be thrown out within 3 months and other products such as foundation, blush and eyeliner after two years. So,  try to remember to check your makeup twice a year and if it’s past its day, throw it away!

  1. Wash your brushes

How often do you wash your makeup brushes? If you’re like me, not that often.

It’s one of those things that I know I should do but it just seems to slip my mind. However, makeup brushes are prime breeding grounds for bacteria, which can lead to breakouts and skin irritation. So, if you use your brushes every day, you should ideally be washing them every week (or every two...we are all human, right?). Create a cute brush-washing station in your bathroom to remind you to wash them often and use a brush cleaner such as the E.L.F cosmetics daily cleanser, to eliminate bacteria.

  1. Reorganize

There’s no better feeling than having a super clean makeup draw and what better time to do it than spring. A new season means new trends (and new makeup products…). Aside from the aesthetic benefits, taking an hour to reorganise your beauty products can be extremely relaxing and give you a little bit of ‘me’ time, whilst making space for those all-important new purchases. Light a candle, put a facemask on (@vitamasques Jade Face Masks are amazing), turn up the tunes and clean, clean, clean.

  1. Change your daily face routine

Although it is quite obvious, it can be easy to forget that your skins’ needs vary from season to season. As the weather gets warmer, your skin is naturally exposed to more vitamin D, so your winter moisturiser is probably too rich for summer. It's a good idea to switch it out for one that’s lighter and contains SPF 30. It is also recommended to switch your daily cleanser each season. To avoid looking as shiny as a freshly cleaned car, go for oil-free, lightweight products, like the @balancemebeauty Flash Cleanse, that will hydrate your skin and leave a sexy dewy glow.

  1. Brighten up your palette

Over the long winter season, we tend to stay safe and stick to the classic smokey eye and red lip combo to match our black on black outfits. Spring means more colours and more experimental fashion, so why not experiment with your makeup too? Get yourself in the spring spirit by brightening up your palette. Start slow and build your look one by one. Maybe try a rose blush, our favourite is the loose blush pot from @annabelleminerals_uk!  Then mix it up with some funky gel nail stickers, we recommend the @mepsyuk and don’t be afraid to experiment with your eye shadow!
