Do lash growth serums actually work? We get to the bottom of this hotly debated question

Surely we all dream of possessing a set of naturally long, flutter-full lashes? I certainly do. A set of lovely long thick lashes that I can bat away mascara-free is my own idea of aesthetic perfection. If like me you’ve spent years trying to find a lash-lengthening mascara that perfectly mimics falsies (i’ll save you the bother - it doesn’t exist) or you invest half your monthly wages (and precious time) on fortnightly lash-extension appointments having your eyes taped shut and painstakingly glued (something which, ironically, only serves to weaken your own measly lashes) then you’ll appreciate the claims of a lash serum.

Promising to deliver naturally longer, thicker, even glossier lashes in a matter of weeks, lash growth serums are either the stuff of miracles or they’re a seriously clever marketing ploy: I’ve always liked to believe they’re the former. So, in the name of hope - and for all my fellow mole-eyed lash-seekers- I’ve made it my mission to find out the truth: do lash-growth serums ACTUALLY work?

Firstly, let’s consider HOW they work. There are scientifically very few ingredients that can actively stimulate new growth, so growth from follicular level can only occur with the presence of certain ingredients in prescription-only products. A couple of these are bimatoprost and prostaglandins- usually only available from behind the pharmacist counter, and not always available in the UK. This does make the term ‘lash growth serum’ a little misleading.

However certain ‘lash serums’ - more widely available and not requiring a doctor’s note - DO contain super-nourishing ingredients that can prevent lash breakage (similar to the way a conditioner does for your hair) and follicle-stimulating peptides can leave your lashes stronger- and looking so, which will make them look darker and thicker. Both of which are super-effective for building the look and feel of your lashes.

That’s exactly what Caprea Natura Lash and Brow Serum, £15.90 does. It thickens lashes (and brows) thanks to its restorative blend of hair-nourishing argan, sunflower and avocado oils. Applied twice a day - morning and evening after cleansing your face and eye area - this serum stimulates regeneration of your existing lashes and brows, gradually leading to noticeably fuller and glossier ones.

Like other beauty products that focus on repair this isn’t a product that’s about the quick win - you need to use it for at least 4 weeks to see results, but we suggest sticking with it for 8 for really noticeable ‘growth’ - but it’s so worth the patience, when you see longer, thicker lashes and brows, that are all your own.

PS. If you want to give it a try you’ll find one in your May Roccabox. For lashes use the applicator on the bottle cap to apply a line from the inside corner of your eye to the end of your eyelid. For eyebrows do the same, following the natural growth direction of your brows.
